New American Judaism?
March 17, 2008
Those who were intrigued by my earlier post on bourgeois liberalism and its discontents among both blacks and Jews should be interested in this review by Allan Brownfeld of The New American Judaism by Rabbi Arthur Blecher.
I myself am not inclined to go as far when it comes to issues like intermarriage, nor to dismiss out of hand the massive demographic decline forecast for American Jews, but on the fundamentals shared by Blecher and Brownfeld I wholeheartedly agree – that American Judaism and its establishment evolved into a perverse identity-group worship, to which observance has no deeper meaning or purpose than to insure its own perpetuation. Further, that this is gravely detached from the reality of most American Jews and, by the grace of God, many of us are finding ways to rebuild a more righteous Judaism in spite of the Conference of Presidents.
